Maltese woman dies in Belize traffic accident; family issues statement

Maltese archaeology student Angie Bugeja, 23, died in a traffic accident in Belize yesterday.

Her death in the Americas was confirmed by the Foreign Affairs Ministry after initial reports had indicated that she had died in Greece.

Belize is bordered on the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea.

A foreign ministry official told this portal that two other women died as a result of the accident, one Greek and the other American. Another two have been hospitalised.

The spokesman said that the women were heading to the airport.

Family issues statement

The family of Angie Bugeja has issued a statement following their daughter’s fatal accident yesterday:

“Our family is devastated and our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful girl Angie who lost her life in a traffic accident in Belize yesterday.

“Angie was a loveable daughter, full of life and with great expectations for the future. She was in Belize on a project as part of her studies for Masters degree and when the accident happened she was on her way back home via the United States.

“Our thoughts, prayers and our hearts go out to the families of her two colleagues who tragically perished with our dearest daughter in the same accident.

“We sincerely ask the media to respect our privacy in this moment of immense sorrow and thank all those who have Angie in their hearts and minds right now.”
