Chinese Ambassador to Malta Cai Jinbiao paid a courtesy call on Finance Minister Edward Scicluna on Friday, 28 June and exchanged views on how to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries in various fields, according to the Chinese Embassy in Malta.

It added that Professor Scicluna said Malta deeply valued its historical friendship with China and the new government hoped to further elevate the relationship to new levels. He suggested that the two sides step up cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, energy, tourism and education, where he believed there were remarkable potential for cooperation.

He also reiterated Malta’s support for China over the case of the EU taking “anti-dumping” measures against Chinese photovoltaic products.

Ambassador Cai spoke highly of the bilateral relationship and commended the new administration for making a commitment to develop stronger ties with China. He said China would like to intensify cooperation with Malta on various fronts to benefit the people of both countries.

China remains grateful to Malta for its valuable understanding and support on issues such as the photovoltaic products and looks forward to stronger collaboration with Malta on regional and international affairs.

The two sides also discussed the renovation of the Chinese Garden project and other matters of common interest.

In a note of clarification sent to this portal, the Finance Ministry said that according to the online Embassy statement, Finance Minister Prof. Scicluna “reiterated Malta’s support for China over the case of the EU taking “anti-dumping” measures against Chinese photovoltaic products.”

“The Ministry would like to clarify that the Finance Minister had said that Malta is a consumer of photo-voltaic panels, and as such a country we benefit from internationally competitive prices.

“However, as a member of the European Union, which is a producer of such products, Malta has to ensure that such trade continues respecting international trade agreements.

“The Minister for Finance enjoyed the meeting immensely, and welcomed the opportunity to deepen relations with China through dialogue and cooperation. He is looking to more opportunities to meet and discuss with H.E. the Ambassador in the future.”
