The corpse of Mario Camilleri senior was exhumed on Tuesday – three days after he was buried – for more forensic examinations to be made, police sources said.
Pathologists discovered that although somebody fired in the direction of Mario Camilleri, 51, the bullet did not penetrate the head.
Camilleri was buried with his son, also named Mario, 21, who was also killed. The two were found in a field in Birzebbuga.
A relative, Jason Galea, has been charged with their murder and the murder of Matthew Zahra, whose remains were also found in the Birzebbuga field.
Ronald Urry has also been charged with the murder of Zahra, while George Galea was charged in connection with the Camilleris’ murder.
