Young entrepreneurs graduate successfully

Malta Independent Sunday, 25 August 2013, 07:14 Last update: about 11 years ago

IVC Malta (International Vocational College) held its second graduation ceremony at the IVC theatre in St Julian’s on 20 June. Students graduated in the Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship as well as the Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Course Level 3. As a college that trains young entrepreneurs, IVC helps students to set up their own businesses and guides them in building a greater understanding of what it means to generate business growth.

Each student prepared a video for the graduation ceremony demonstrating their business idea and the means by which that idea will survive as an on-going trading business. The ambition to succeed and deliver is heavily nurtured within IVCM. Students not only gain a qualification but, more importantly, gain hands-on work experience that enables them to remain one step ahead of their peers in their future careers. A wide-ranging syllabus covers subjects such as business in an international context, financial and business planning, presentation, leadership and teamwork, market research, e-marketing, branding and legislation.

Jessica Azzopardi, a student on the diploma in enterprise and entrepreneurship said: “I have learned so much during the last year. However, this knowledge is not just written down or reproduced through what our lecturers have shared with us. We have practised the skills and learned from the mistakes that have been made by others. One of the most essential things that IVC has helped me with is the increase in confidence; we were asked to step out of our comfort zone in so many ways and, indeed, we have all improved in one aspect of the course or another because of this. I am convinced that this will have a positive influence on our careers and the quality of life in the future.”

Glorianne Cardona, a Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Course student commented: “The course was most informative. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

The BTEC Edexcel verifier, Eddie Connor stated: “IVC has set a good example of educational best practice where staff have taken much care and commitment in undertaking their assessment and internal verification roles.”

An Open Day will be held at Mensija Street, St Julian's on 17 July at 7pm for registration for next year’s Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship.

IVC Malta is a corporate college designed for business by business, giving participants a foundation in business knowledge and skills. It falls under the IVC’s core philosophy of bridging the gap between education and the workplace by boosting students’ potential for future employment. The syllabus is primarily aimed at 17- to 20-year-olds who are in the process of mapping out their future career plans. The diploma qualification that they receive is a three-term, one-year diploma in Level 3 Edexcel Btec and Level 4 Malta Qualifications Framework programme, an internationally recognised qualification that is the equivalent of two A levels. This qualification is complemented by work experience provided and mentoring of students.
