Maltese cross on Facebook over flag change issue

Malta Independent Wednesday, 25 September 2013, 10:38 Last update: about 12 years ago

The periodic discussion over whether the George Cross has a place on the Maltese flag has gone digital, with no less than two Facebook pages being set up within the space of a few days, one calling for the removal of the George Cross in favour of the Maltese cross, and another advocating for its retention.

Although the George Cross was awarded to Malta by the UK, the English language seems to be the first casualty in the pro-George Cross Facebook page, titled ‘The George Cross have [sic] to stay on the Maltese flag.’

The creator of the page insists that “the biggest mistake that we can all do is changing our flag.”

It points out that “the GC is the highest gallantry award for civilians, as well as for members of the armed forces in actions for which purely military honours would not normally be granted.”

Yesterday, a Faceboook page was set up advocating for the removal of the George Cross in favour of the Maltese cross.

The group said that it has absolutely nothing against the UK and the English people, “but it does not make sense to have such a symbol depicted on our national flag when we are now an Independent Republic.
