Malta Independent Saturday, 19 October 2013, 13:14 Last update: about 11 years ago

Between 20 and 25 September, four Maltese students participated in the 25th European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) organised by the European Commission in Prague.

The students from St Edward’s College, Matthew Ben Attard, Joachim Zammit, Edward Thake and Andrew Thake, participated in the Physics theme with their project Switch off, unplug, save. The aim of their study was to investigate the different uses of electricity at home and to find ways to save power and energy. The project outlined how simple life style changes can save a lot of electricity and reduce a person’s carbon footprint.

During this event the Maltese students had the opportunity to share scientific knowledge with other European science students. Over 85 projects in the field of biology, engineering, medicine, chemistry, environment, physics, computing, mathematics and social science were exhibited during the event. The event also included various interactive sessions with established young scientists.

Apart from the Maltese delegation, this year the jury included a Maltese member, Prof. Maria Cordina from the University of Malta. Malta has been participating in this event for the last 15 years and won prizes in 2009 and 2011.

In parallel to this event, the International Movement for Leisure Activities in Science and Technology (MILSET) – Europe organised its General Assembly which was attended by the national organisor, Karl Agius.

NSTF would like to thank the European Commission Representation in Malta for the support provided.
