Master class in vocal technique and interpretation

Malta Independent Saturday, 19 October 2013, 11:05 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Music Department of the University of Malta is holding a Master Class for vocal technique and interpretation. This Master Class is funded and supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in cooperation with the University of Malta, School of Performing Arts and St James Cavalier.

The Master Class with Verena Rein from Germany is for active and passive participants and will be held at the Music Room, St James Cavalier, Valletta as follows:

Friday, 1 November 5pm- 8pm

Saturday, 2 November 8.30am-12.30pm

Sunday, 3 November 9am (option for another session in the morning)

Through the film The liberation of sound (released late 2010 and highly praised by the professional press and singers alike), Verena Rein has managed to bring the vocal technique she represents to a broader public. Over 40 years of extensive vocal research by KS Peter Gougaloff and the further developments of his insights by Verena Rein have opened new worlds for classical singing. The film’s great success speaks for itself.

This special technique leads to effortlessness, beauty of sound, evenness of registers, individual timbre, richness of colours, longevity of the singing voice, dynamic strength of nuance, naturalness of articulation, and much more.

Both the resulting sound and the longevity of a voice thus trained, as well as the effortlessness with which a singer can perform, are so convincing and pleasant for the singers and their audience that it is high time to further spread and impart this knowledge.

Soprano Verena Rein takes on this task with great enthusiasm and intense dedication, not only in her own performances, but also for professional singers and voice students for whom a real vocal technique has become more and more important. This technique, originally based on the Italian bel canto method, doesn’t rely on products of coincidence or traditionalised, unquestioned instructions, which can lead to vocal problems, but is explainable and demonstrable through all registers. It enables great dynamic nuancing, an unusual range of colour and a natural articulation, as well as an individuality of sound with extraordinary effortlessness.

Active participants are welcome to sing a piece of their repertoire (song, aria). An accompanying pianist has to be provided by the participant.

Please confirm your active participation and the selection of your song or aria by tomorrow, 18 October to the secretary of the Music Department of the University of Malta, Michela Casha at [email protected]

Verena Rein will perform a song recital on Thursday, 31 October at 8pm with Lieder by Brahms Wolf Mahler Strauss Ullmann Weill at St James. Charlene Farrugia will be the pianist.
