‘It is totalitarian governments that repeal citizenship’ - Prime Minister

Malta Independent Sunday, 10 November 2013, 11:16 Last update: about 11 years ago

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat yesterday ridiculed PN leader Simon Busuttil’s threat to repeal the Citizenship Act if elected to government, saying that it is “totalitarian regimes that repeal citizenships.”

Speaking at an event in Victoria, Gozo, Dr Muscat said that such a repeal would be in clear violation of the Constitution and of the European Charter on Human Rights.

“Simon Busuttil said that there should be a quota on the amount of people being granted citizenship. With that same argument, should we place a quota on the amount of foreigners allowed to marry Maltese?,” Dr Muscat questioned.

Dr Muscat said that yesterday morning the Opposition voted against having a regulator in place overseeing the citizenship process.

“If I had anything to hide, I would not have nominated Godwin Grima as the regulator of the Citizenship Scheme, a person who was until recently the Head of the Civil Service under a Nationalist Government,” Dr Muscat said.
