Foreign governments could use Malta's new citizenship scheme to buy passports for their secret agents, PN MP Jason Azzopardi warned this evening in Parliament.
"Over the past few years, the Maltese government was approached by foreign governments to give passports to agents of their secret services," Dr Azzopardi said.
“We always without fail turned down these requests, even when good reasons were given. Lawrence Gonzi’s government always turned them down. What is 650,000 euro to the secret services of certain countries,” Dr Azzopardi asked.
He said that that these agents know how to bluff their way through a due diligence process in order to obtain a Maltese passport under the new citizenship scheme.
“What they do with this passport will ultimately reflect on Malta,” Dr Azzopardi warned.
The PN MP hit out at Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, saying that he is on a “vastly subsidies ego trip, where arrogance is a virtue.”
He said that both the Police and Armed Forces of Malta, or the Armed Force of Mallia as Dr Azzopardi dubbed it, have been hijacked by the Labour party he said.
He said that the police were made to spend hours trawling through CCTV footage in order to see whether someone had taken a picture at the airport instead of combating crime, the MP said in reference to the Norman Vella saga.
Dr Azzopardi said that 18 members of the AFM are currently seeking redress after they were overlooked for promotion.
