Malta Independent Saturday, 21 December 2013, 10:02 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Home Affairs Ministry’s chief of staff, Silvio Scerri, was appointed one of the five members of the Petitions Board, effective today.

The other members of the new board, which was appointed for a two-year term, are Carlo Stivala and lawyers Kathleen Grima, Angele Agius and Vince Micallef.

The Petitions Board was set up in 2005, and grants people the opportunity to contest contravention tickets issued by police and wardens.

Petitions can be lodged on the grounds of an evident mistake in the identity of the offender or in the identification of a vehicle, an evident mistake which resulted in wrongful guilty verdict or humanitarian reasons attenuating the circumstances relating to the commission of the offence. Petitions can be submitted in writing or online through the Local Enforcement System website www.les.gov.mt.
