PN MEP hopeful calls for more female candidates

Malta Independent Monday, 13 January 2014, 11:23 Last update: about 11 years ago

A PN MEP candidate has called for more female candidates for the European Parliament elections. Kevin Plumpton, President of the PN’s youth wing and a former Zabbar councilor, wrote on Facebook that the PN has “very valid candidates” and hoped that this team will help the PN obtain the third seat it deserves in Brussels.

But he adds that it could be the case that there are too many men and “the challenge remains to involve more women in politics. Together we will get there.”

The PN has so far announced 11 candidates, only three of which are women – MEP Roberta Metsola, human rights lawyer Therese Comodini Cachia and former Playmobil CEO Helga Ellul. The male candidates are David Casa, Jonathan Shaw, Kevin Cutajar, Norman Vella, Francis Zammit Dimech, Ray Bugeja, Stefano Mallia, and Mr Plumpton.

The Labour Party also has three female candidates but so far it has only announced ten candidates. The female contenders for the EP are TV presenter and journalist Miriam Dalli, MP Deborah Schembri and marketing manager Fleur Vella. The male candidates are Alfred Sant, Peter Cordina, Lino Bianco, Ivan Grixti, Clint Camilleri, Cyrus Engerer and Mario Farrugia Borg.

Both parties could announce more candidates before the May election.
