‘Happy Days’ celebrates 40th anniversary

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 January 2014, 09:04 Last update: about 11 years ago

It was 40 years ago that Happy Days went on the air for the first time in the United States, and then followed all over the world. Since then, millions have watched the show and repeated viewings, including the younger generations who were not even born in 1974.

Set in the mid-50s world of rock’n’roll, diners, and high-school romances, it projected an idealised, nostalgic view of the era. It is still worth watching today, and the Fonz still fascinates with his playboy attitude.

Set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the show revolved around the ups and downs of teenager Richie Cunningham and his family - and their relationship with tough guy Arthur Fonzarelli, better known as the Fonz.

Many of the actors moved on, with Ron Howard, who played Richie, becoming one of the more important film directors in Hollywood. Henry Winkler took on other roles, but his association with the Fonz will be hard for him to brush aside.

The show ran for 10 years until 1984. In all, 255 episodes were filmed.
