No reports under the Whistleblower Act have been directly referred to the police so far, a spokesperson for the Police told The Malta Independent.
Shortly before the Act came into force, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that by virtue of the new law he would like clarifications on the “BWSC power station tender and other public contracts over the years.”
He also said he would also like more information to be given on unsolved murders including those of Karin Grech and Raymond Caruana and others that took place in the seventies and eighties.
The Act, which came into force in September of last year, ensures that all ministries now have an official who is responsible to receive reports from whistleblowers.
The Cabinet Office also has an External Whistleblower Office to receive any information regarding the government and its companies.
The law also applies to large private organisations, which are obliged to appoint a Whistleblower officer
The levels of protection given to whistleblowers will vary according to the circumstances of a case.
