Malta Independent Saturday, 22 February 2014, 10:54 Last update: about 11 years ago

For the first time, Gozo is expected to have a separate policy related to tourism, the policy document to be launched in the coming days and which will address various issues including accessibility between Malta and Gozo, the isalnd's potential product and how best the island can be promoted.

This was announced by Tourism Minister Karmenu Vella and the Gozo minister Anton Refalo during an annual general meeting of the Gozo Tourism Association (GTA).

Mr Vella said that the aim of the policy document is to make Gozo’s tourism sector a stronger and sustainable one while at the same time addressing the environmental, social and financial aspects.

As part of its plans, Mr Vella also pointed out that the government is establishing whether an air-strip would be feasible for the island while also looking at the possibilty of introducing a fast ferry service.

The Gozo minister meanwhile said that the torusim market is far more different to Malta’s since while Malta’s tourists are mainly foreigners, Gozo receives 37,000 tourists and the same number of Maltese ‘tourists’.
