Part of MFCC steel structure collapses on Gensna stage; man in critical condition

Malta Independent Monday, 17 March 2014, 11:03 Last update: about 11 years ago

Part of a steel structure used to rig lights inside the MFCC tent at Ta' Qali collapsed on the stage to be used for the Gensna musical presentation at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali has collapsed.

Three people have been injured in the accident, one of them in critical condition, sources said. He is a 48-year-old man of Fgura. Another two, a 26-year-old man from Kalkara and a 31-year-old man from Cospicua suffered slight injuries.

Sources said that the entity of the accident could have been worse if it had happened Tuesday, when a full rehearsal of the musical is scheduled. It is not known whether this rehearsal - or the weekend's show - will take place.

Producer David Borg, in a statement, said that the structure that collapsed is part of the permanent steel construction that supports the tent. The Gensna stage remained intact, he said. The organisers expressed their solidarity with the injured workers and wished them a speedy recovery.

Members of the Civil Protection Department and the police were on site to help the injured.

The injured persons were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

The presentation of the musical will be held this weekend as part of celebrations commemorating the 50 years of Independence, 40 years of Republic Day and 35 years of Freedom Day.
