PN’s position on Civil Unions dictated by political convenience - PL

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 April 2014, 12:59 Last update: about 11 years ago

The PN Leader has insulted all those who want equal rights for everyone by confirming in an interview that he put the party’s interests before everything else, the PL said in a statement.

Referring to two interviews published today in The Malta Independent, the PL said that it is clear that the PN is divided on issues that separate the country’s past from its future.

“This was also confirmed in another interview with PN MP Claudette Buttigieg, who said that she tried to convince other PN MPs to vote in favour of the Civil Unions Bill but admitted that there were others who were against.”

The Labour Party said that the PN’s position was dictated by political convenience and not conviction. “Simon Busuttil wanted equality a la’ carte. He wanted to choose which rights gay persons should enjoy. Under Simon Busuttil the PN went backwards on civil rights. Once again, the PN and Simon Busuttil are on the wrong side of history. The PL is proudly showing that it wants the country to move forward.”
