Alfred Sant ‘not euro-sceptic’ – Joseph Muscat

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 April 2014, 10:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

According to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, PL EP candidate and former Prime Minister Alfred Sant is not a euro-sceptic.

Dr Sant, who led the campaign against Malta’s EU membership before the accession in 2004, said at a political event last week that “people should trust the party that always said the truth about the EU.”

When asked by The Malta Independent about Dr Sant’s comments, Dr Muscat did not agree that Dr Sant was still making euro-sceptical remarks. “Different people from different political parties said things that came true. No one has a monopoly over the truth and people should choose whomever they feel is best suited to represent them in the European Parliament.”

Dr Muscat insisted that all the PL candidates have the necessary credentials to represent Malta in the EU.

He added: “The issue of EU membership has been long closed and no one has the intention to raise the issue again. As a people we will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of EU membership in the coming days.”

When this paper noted that Dr Sant was still clinging to his pre-2004 arguments, Dr Muscat insisted that that is “our interpretation.” The Prime Minister said that Dr Sant “is making good arguments about how one can be the best representative of Malta in the EU.”
