One year into his role as PN leader, Simon Busuttil says that he is coming out of his shell and those who knew him as an MEP are now seeing a different side of him as the Opposition leader.

In an interview published tomorrow in the Malta Independent on Sunday, Dr Busuttil admits that his political formation on the European stage does carry a certain amount of “baggage,” and his consensus-seeking style may at times make him come across as looking “weak.”

He is adamant, however, that his consensual style of doing politics will not change.

“I bring back [to Malta] the political formation I had for nine years in the European Parliament and I do not want to give that up, that is Simon, that is me. I am a person who has had that formation, but it is also a mark of my own personality.”

Of life on the European Parliament campaign trail, Dr Busuttil fends off the notion that he may comes across as sounding like a broken record in his daily speeches. 

 “It is not a broken record, you can deliver the same speech using different words, but you also need to stress and repeat. Bear in mind that since I have very limited media output because of our constraints and limitations, I need to do a lot of repetition. As they say in marketing, when you are fed-up of repeating something, people are only beginning to pay attention.”
