Malta Independent Sunday, 18 May 2014, 14:13 Last update: about 11 years ago

Following popular request, we are descending once again to underworld. Fresh from its debut at Le Salon Malta's 9 March event of the same name, this unique Micro-Theatre Inspired Performance has been transposed from the Second War Shelters of Villa Bologna in Attard to those nestling beneath an old wine bar in the historic centre of Zejtun.

The performance will be staged at Il-Kantina ta' Katarin, Zejtun between Friday 23 May at 8.30pm to Sunday 25 May at 10.30pm A number of shows will be held every night and each performance is 25 minutes long.

Based on original poems and performance texts by Miriam Calleja, 'As The Dust Settles', observes the post mortem of a tango, danced out, whilst an unrequited dyad explores themes of nostalgia, wistful yearning, letting go and redemption.  The production is a a collaboration between Wi111ow Theatre and Le Salon Malta.

If you should wish to reserve a table to unwind prior to or after the event, please phone on 2767 7766 or 99409837 / 79422268. Il-Kantina has a very, very reasonably priced menu featuring platters, focaccia, pasta and more plus a fully stocked wine cellar. Actress and director Alba Florian Viton on 'As The Dust Settles':

'As the Dust Settles' is based on the wide spectrum of interpretations that can fall under the meaning of the theme 'dance'. During last year's Le Salon Malta event, 'Invisible Threads' , together with some other actresses, I had helped poetess, Miriam Calleja come up with performance pieces based on the interpretation of eight of her poems. This year however, Miriam and I have been working much closer on the creation of this performance piece. She writes the poems which I then interpret into images which are once again discussed with Miriam for approval and eventually metamorphosise into performances.

My main theatre training comes from Nicole Bugeja, with whom I have been doing physical actor training for the past four years. I find that Bugeja's direction has helped me a great deal in creating these physical images.

The performance will take place inside the tiny rooms of the World War 2 war shelters found underground 'Il-Kantina ta' Katarin'. The performance will move from an underground shelter room to another with an audience of just ten people at a time.

My B.A Hons. thesis was based on the study of a new form of theatre in Madrid called Micro Theatre. The special thing about this new form lies in the fact that micro performances/plays only take 15/20 minutes and these short pieces are performed in very tiny basement rooms of about 15 square meters. Approximately only 10 audience members are allowed to enter a micro play at once and they witness the action whilst standing against the walls of the tiny room. How more intimate can you get? Thankfully, the shelter rooms are around the same size so we have been able to base our work on this innovative form of theatre, originating from Spain. May I stress the point that it is only based upon this new form and does not fall completely under the prerequisites which would make it a Micro Theatre play.

Miriam and I have decided to anchor this performance on the choreographies created by two individuals in a relationship and how, sometimes, such choreographies come to an undesired end, leaving the protagonists with the hope of reuniting their dance steps in a future ‘life-time’.
