Armed Forces Union affiliates itself with the GWU

Malta Independent Monday, 2 June 2014, 13:44 Last update: about 12 years ago

The newly-formed Armed Forces of Malta's union has affiliated itself with the General Workers Union (GWU), following in the footsteps of the Police Union.

Speaking at a press conference, GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb praised the Armed Forces’ personnel for choosing the GWU, which he described as being a consistent and credible union.

Mr Zarb said the GWU will do everything it can to provide the best service to AFM members and their families through the Armed Forces Union. As is the case with other uniformed services, AFM personnel will not have the right to industrial action.

The GWU Secretary General implored the government to hurry up in its implementation of the law allowing members of the corps to unionise. He also asked the Opposition not to delay the passing of the law in any way.

When asked by this paper Mr Zarb said the GWU will stand up for its members whenever there are allegations of injustices or unjust transfers but the union will not replace the army injustices board or take up its role.

Mr Zarb did not exclude further affiliations with other Unions, including that of the detention services. Discussions are ongoing and other developments could be communicated in the coming days.
