Claire Zammit Xuereb – whose husband was one of two victims of a fatal double stabbing in their Sliema flat – has appealed to others not to leave doors and windows open at night, so as to avoid becoming victims of similar tragedies.
Writing on Facebook a few days ago, Mrs Zammit Xuereb said the fact that her balcony door was left open on that fateful night cost her husband Duncan’s life.
“We left the balcony door ajar for our new borns’ tiny clothes to dry in order not to be swallowed by our dryer. It cost us a precious life! If it wasnt’t for my husband, would have cost my life too and God forbid what else would have happened.”
“I do not want to instil fear, Ms Zammit Xuereb wrote, “as destiny is destiny after all, but I do appeal to all of you who still leave their doors and windows open at night time, to be conscious of your safety and that of your family! Haven’t we learnt our lesson?!! Let us learn from each other and not allow ourselves to be victim. 2years 5 months x”
The double-murder happened two years and five months ago, on the night of New Year ’s Eve. The case that shocked the nation is still shrouded in mystery and no official explanation of what happened has been given. This led to a number of different theories and speculation.
Nicholas Gera was the second man to die in the stabbing. Claire Zammit Xuereb - the daughter of entrepreneur Anglu Xuereb – had claimed that Gera, whom she said she had never known, was allegedly armed with two knives when he attacked her husband in their bedroom early on New Year's Day.
