Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit has failed to explain why charges against a man who ‘assaulted’ four police officers inside the Zabbar  police station last year were first suspended and then completely withdrawn.

Sources told this paper that the case happened in June last year when a man from Marsaxlokk assaulted a police sergeant and three constables and was subsequently arrested.

According to the information obtained by The Malta Independent, the man took out his mobile phone and made a call immediately after the incident.  The station sergeant issued three charges against the man: breaching the public peace, disobeying police orders and assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.

It seems, however, that the charges were suspended the following August and then were completely withdrawn in December.

Commissioner fails to answer questions

Two weeks ago this paper sent questions by email to the Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit and asked him to explain why the charges were dropped. After Mr Zammit failed to reply to our email, this paper contacted him by phone. He confirmed that the charges were withdrawn but said he needed some time to decide what details could be released as this was “a delicate case.”

The Commissioner promised to reply by the end of last week and asked us to send a reminder if he failed to reply in time. We sent him a reminder on 6 June and another one last Thursday, but to no avail.
