Antipsychotic drug out of stock

Malta Independent Friday, 11 July 2014, 10:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat nervous, emotional, and mental conditions (such as schizophrenia), is out of stock, this newspaper is informed.

The medicine comes in five or 10mgs pills, both are unavailable at the moment.

It may also be used alone or with other medicines to treat bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) or mania that is part of bipolar disorder. This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription.

Sources who spoke to this portal said that if patients failed to take this medicine, they could face serious health complications. “They can decompensate (lose the ability to maintain normal or appropriate psychological defences, sometimes resulting in depression, anxiety, or delusions) if they do not have it.”

The drug is used very frequently as a mood stabilizer as well and people with bipolar illness can revert to mania without it.
