Speaker says he cannot force government to table documents

Malta Independent Wednesday, 16 July 2014, 18:16 Last update: about 12 years ago

Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia today gave the go-ahead to the continuation of the debate on turning energy corporation Enemalta into a public liability company.

Yesterday, the Opposition contested the continuation of the debate as the government has yet to table the Memorandum of Understanding on the part-sale of Enemalta to a Chinese company, as well as the contract signed with the ElectroGas consortium, which will build the new gas-fired plant.

Dr Farrugia noted that the tabling of such documents is done at the prerogative of the Minister concerned, and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi said he will be presenting the documents at the opportune time.

Dr Farrugia said the House has to authority to force the government to table such documents.
