Mr Justice Gino Camilleri passed away today, aged 64. In a statement, the Department of Information paid tribute to him, hailing his long career in the Maltese law courts.
The son of the late Lewis Camilleri and of the late Teodora nèe Bruno, Mr Justice Camilleri was born in Valletta. He graduated Doctor of Laws in November 1973.
He was appointed Magistrate in 1983 and sat in the Court of Magistrates in both Malta and Gozo, dealing with criminal and civil cases.
He also presided over the Rent Regulation Board, the Land Arbitration Board and the Rural Leases Control Board.
In 1995, he was appointed Judge of the Superior Courts and has since been ordinarily sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court.
He has also dealt with criminal cases in the Criminal Court and in the Court of Criminal Appeal and is currently the Judge ordinarily sitting in the Voluntary Jurisdiction Section of the Civil Court.
In 2003 Judge Camilleri became a member of the European Forum of Judges for the Environment.
The Nationalist Party has expressed condolences.
