Maltese athletes took part in four sport disciplines on Day1 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow yesterday.

Judoka Jeremy Saywell, taking part in the under 66 kilogram category, lost by an ippon against Manoj Nandal of India. In Lawn Bowls, Maltese pair Leonard Callus and John Parnis beat Norfolk Islands 18-16 while in the women’s singles, Carmen Spiteri lost 21-7 against English opponent Melmore.

Kim Borg Cauchi and Colette Sultana both suffered defeats in squash. Cauchi lost 3-0 against Saffery of Wales. Sultana lost 3-2 against Kethsarani of Sri Lanka. Other Maltese players, Bradley Hindle Deguara and Daniel Zammit were given a bye in the first round.

In the following round, Deguara beat Welshman Fitzgerald 3-0 while Zammit lost 3-0 against Seth of Guyana. Deguara was however eliminated in the third round by Malaysian opponent Yuen after going down 3-1.

There was some disappointment for triathlete Keith Galea who failed to complete the race. Danica Bonello Spiteri meanwhile finished in 15th place out of 24 athletes in the women’s category in two hours, 21minutes and 14 seconds.
