Norman Vella takes own party to task on local council elections

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 July 2014, 14:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

As the ongoing debate on the government’s proposition to postpone next year’s local council elections until 2019 ensues, former Nationalist MEP candidate Norman Vella has come up with a somewhat novel, if not eccentric, idea for the PN to organise its own local council elections next year.

“The proposal by the Labour government to postpone local council elections by five years is wrong and sets a dangerous precedent,” Mr Vella says.  “It should not go unchallenged.

“The Nationalist Party should respond to this democratic defiance by doing what the government does not want to do, that is give a voice to the electorate.

“If the government’s proposal goes ahead, the Nationalist Party should find a way to organise an election to elect its own mayors and councillors, once the term of the incumbents expires in March.”
