‘All major TV stations have a light Orchestra’ – PBS

Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) has responded to claims by V-18 and One TV Chairman Jason Micallef that there are ‘hidden interests’ in the setting up of an Orchestra run by the national broadcaster.

Taking to Facebook, Mr Micallef said a number of people have asked him for his thoughts on the PBS Orchestra.

“Certain interests exist in PBS that are beyond understanding and are not in the national interest,” Mr Micallef said.

In response, a PBS spokesperson said that all major TV stations have a light Orchestra.

“PBS is currently investing in an HD theatre studio and our objective is to be able to have large format programmes with live music giving the best possible exposure to Maltese talent.”

“The orchestra will be conducted by Mro  Paul Abela and Mro Joe Brown who complement each other with their distinct musical focus,  and will be composed of around 40 part time musicians in line with the relevant formation for such  programmes.”

“A TV orchestra composition is very different to a Philharmonic orchestra and the repertoire  is extremely different.

“PBS works very closely to the National Philharmonic Orchestra and there is absolutely no conflict."
