A wicked concert this way comes

Malta Independent Tuesday, 26 August 2014, 12:49 Last update: about 11 years ago

One of the most anticipated musical events of the summer calendar is now just a few days away. Taking place on 29 and 30 August at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta, Klezmorimalta Nights will bring together two of the world’s best Klezmer bands, along with up-and-coming Dutch music sensation Démira.

The two-night event, which has been in the works for a year, is being organised by the Klezmorimalta Foundation – an NGO founded by Birgit and Ralph Albrecht that has recently revealed its long-term aims to safeguard traditional genres of music and the way they are created.

“We may not be musicians by profession, but we have always had acoustic instruments and the traditional ways of creating music at heart,” explains Birgit Albrecht, who moved to Malta in 2013 to found the Klezmorimalta Foundation along with husband Ralph. “Of course, there is no better way to safeguard something than by pushing it into the limelight and showing audiences that it is still relevant.”

This highly-anticipated concert will feature the Amsterdam Klezmer Band on 29 August and the German Yxalag Klezmer Band on 30 August, along with Dutch, poetic folk singer-songwriter Démira, who released her latest EP and music video Indigo earlier this year. All three acts will fly to Malta especially for the event.

“Klezmer, which is a genre that originated in Eastern Europe over the last couple of centuries, has Balkan and gypsy influences, and its sound is fun and vivacious,” says Birgit. “Both Klezmer bands are highly-commendable and audiences all over the world are intuitively prone to getting off of their seats and interacting with the bands.
“Démira should also go down incredibly well with Maltese audiences – she is a true star in the making, and from the feedback we’ve received so far, many have enjoyed hearing her music.” Birgit concludes.
