Ghajnsielem piazza restoration part of drive to boost religious tourism

The Ghajnsielem church parvis and piazza are set to be restored thanks to a government funded project aimed at boosting religious tourism to Gozo.

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo announced on Friday that the Gozo Ministry will contribute €106,000 to the project, which will include asphalt works, accessibility features and a new LED lighting system.

Dr Refalo said over the years there were many attempts to reach an agreement for the restoration of the piazza. The Ghajnsielem piazza, deemed to be one of Malta’s most beautiful village squares, had deteriorated considerably. Finally, an agreement was reached between the Ministry and the Gozo Curia.

The agreement was signed by Gozo Ministry Permanent Secretary John Borg, Ghajnsielem Archpriest Frankie Bajada and Gozo Curia Administrator Victor Gusman in the presence of the Minister.

Dr Refalo said the project will improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and reduce energy use, thus addressing the aims of the Eco-Gozo vision.

The Ghajnsielem parish, dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the consecration of the Archpresbiterial church.

Dr Refalo also announced that the Ministry will also be supporting a project at the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. A couple of weeks ago the Ministry announced major restoration works on the Christ the Saviour statue in Marsalforn. These projects will boost religious tourism to Gozo, the minister said.
