Commission for Persons with Disability should remain independent - PN to put forward bill

Sunday, 19 October 2014, 14:20 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Nationalist Party will be putting forward a private members bill in parliament, to ensure that the National Council for Persons with the Disability (NCPD) is in accordance with the Paris Principles, a list of responsibilities for national institutions, which are adopted by the United Nations.

The motion was discussed during the equal opportunity forum of the PN, led by new candidate Graziella Schembri, who said that the bill is in line with the Disability virtue of Matters act, approved in parliament in 2012.

According to the Law of Equal Opportunities, The National Commission Persons with Disability is appointed to ensure that state parties consider the role of national institutions for the protection and promotion of human rights. However, to date the NCPD is not compliant with the Paris Principles.

PN spokesperson Stephen Spiteri, who will be presenting the motion, said that the commission should remain independent and act as a regulatory body online. At present the NCPD is a government entity.
