Ups and downs on the Ramblers’ first seasonal walk

Monday, 20 October 2014, 16:34 Last update: about 11 years ago

Some 60 ramblers recently assembled for the first walk of the season at St Julian's. The idea was smart:   hug the coastline up to Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, then turn inland and scale Wied il-Faħam towards Madliena fort, and back to the start point through the garrison town of Pembroke. It had an array of interests: scenic,  historical, cultural as well as natural.  The views from the coastline in the brilliant sunshine of early morning were exhilarating as ramblers skimmed the waterline right up to Paceville. Except for the part under the unsightly towering concrete walls of the Portomaso complex, where one had to watch one's step as there is hardly any leeway  from the water's edge, the scenes were leisurely enjoyed and photographed. Unfortunately, the water's edge had to be abandoned on approaching the Dragonara right up to St George's Bay. Here's hoping that the Authorities will remedy this lack of coastal access when considering the new development proposals in the area. Some ramblers had a first and surprising glimpse of the charming Gnien Pembroke with its waters and greens. The firing ranges were bypassed as the walk  headed to the restored Qalet Marku Tower and adjacent example of the rock-hewn fugasse. As ramblers strolled along the natural garigue area underneath the White Rocks complex they were able to realise what  a sad loss it would be, for the area particularly and Malta generally, should it give way for more-of-the-same urban development. After a light snack at Baħar ic-Cagħaq the walk proceeded inland. Seascapes gave way to landscapes as the overwhelming landmass over Wied il-Faħam dominated the ascent up the valley.  It was only half-way up unfortunately. The walk-leader sensed the inclement weather that was to follow and made headway to the right towards the White Rocks and the garrison town, before winding up in St George's Bay following Wied Ħarq Ħamiem. And just in time too! The proverbial doors of heaven opened up and the slow walkers got a good soaking.
