Libyan PM says final decision on the sale of cheap oil and gas to Malta is still 'under evaluation'

The Libyan government is still studying the agreement signed last year with Malta for the purchase of cheap oil and other energy products.

Speaking at a press conference at Castille, Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al Thinni said a similar agreement has been signed with Tunis, and "after a while they will come to a decision."

"It is under evaluation," he said.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said there is no question about the validity of the deal signed with then Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan in September 2013.

Dr Muscat said the issue is when Libya's oil production will once again return to normal. Production is currently at 800,000 barrels per day, and is expected to increase "in the coming weeks and months."

"This is when we expect the agreement to come into effect," Dr Muscat said.

The Prime Minister said he is “thrilled” that Malta is the first European country being visited by the new Libyan PM. The visit, he said, reiterates the strong relationship enjoyed between the two countries.

Dr Muscat pointed out that security in Libya is vital to the security of the wider Mediterranean region.

“I would like to reiterate the Maltese government’s positions that dialogue is the only way out and the only way forward for the government of Libya.”

He said the government headed by Prime Minister Thinni is the sole and legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

The Libyan Prime Minister’s is being used for both bilateral discussion, as well as discussiong the situation in Libya at a wider European level.

The UN’s special envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon will hold talks in Malta with Mr Thinni later this evening.

Mr Thinni said Libya is asking for “logistical support” to help ward off militias that have taken control of Libya and other cities.

Opposition leader not informed about talks

In an earlier press conference, PN leader Simon Busuttil said that the Opposition is not informed on the nature of talks being held between the government and the Libyan Prime Minister and the delegation accompanying him.
