Spend the day at University today

Discover University Open Day being held today, promises to be abuzz with activities for all ages. Open from 10 till 5, with ample parking and canteen facilities available. The full programme is available at www.um.edu.mt/discoveruniversity.The University of Malta Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr Philip Ciantar marks the official opening with a short performance. The Digital Games zone will be showing what kinds of games are possible when small teams of game designers collaborate in a spirit of fun and experimentation. UoMR will be there, offering a photo opportunity with the Formula-style racing car that the students designed, built and participated with in an international race. The Faculty of Science is celebrating its centenary by laying out a variety of activities and experiments for everyone to participate in. Visitors can also take a Botanical Tour around Campus with the well-known biologist Dr Sandro Lanfranco. At the Library one can take a tour, and also meet the two authors, Mr Kenneth Caruana and Mr Charles Casha, who shall speak about their writing experiences.  There will be Storytelling through Images and various exhibitions. Library staff will be selling their culinary delights at the bake sale, with all proceeds going to Inspire. At the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology children and adults can enjoy Thomas the TanK Village, assemble a robot or participate in the ICT Expo, see the ICT Heritage area and find out about  Using Technology in the 21st Century.BodyParts is an interesting exhibition of anatomy teaching samples made by plastinating real specimens of the human body after preservation. The Malta Medical Students' Association (MMSA) will be providing health checks and information on healthy lifestyles. They will also be showing off their teddy bear hospital to the children. The Edward de Bono Institute is set on encouraging guests to try some brain training in creativity. Other visitors may be interested in learning about the recently discovered ancient shipwreck from 2,700 years ago. International students are keen to interest their audiences in a talk on French Monuments, Fashion, Wine & Culture, Traditional Food & a Traditional Costume from Japan, a display of photos and a presentation on Germany, Flute Playing, Caligraphy & Paper Cutting Craft from China, and imparting the Irish Culture through Words & Music.The various zones in the marquee, in the tent, and in the pavilion include information areas by the Cottonera Resource Centre, the Liberal Arts & Sciences, Students' Advisory Services, and Climate Change and Sustainable Development, which this year is focusing on the theme of Walking and the benefits of using physical activity as a mode of transport. Visitors interested in sport may take part in the Five-a-side Tournament, the Fun Run, Walk, or Relay race, learn the basics of the game of Frisbee and also basketball. There will also be a demonstration of Tai Chi and a tug-of-war. The activity 'Eggciting Eggucation' has a focus on nutrition and science education related to eggs in our diet. Drop by to learn, see and taste eggciting things organised by the Nutrition, Family and Consumer Studies students of the Faculty of Education. Geography Matters... in Aviation is a slide show on the start of Aviation in Malta: the Kalafrana Seaplane base, organised by Malta Aviation Museum in collaboration with the Department of Geography.At the TakeOff Business Incubator visitors can hear about Starting a Successful Technology Business while Studying, Discover Early Stage Investing, Go Beyond and their innovative way of investing, and obtain some help to get a business idea off the ground.The Department of History and the Malta University Historical Society (MUHS) in collaboration with the Malta Historical Fencing Association (MHFA) invite the public to join them for a practical demonstration of the sword-fighting and martial art techniques of the period of the Knights of Malta. Experts in the field will describe various sword models and related fighting techniques and give demonstrations of these. The public will also have the chance to handle carefully-crafted models of these weapons. This is an opportunity not to be missed where history will come to life and visitors too will have the chance to 'Fight like a Knight'.
