A man who was filmed stealing from a Mellieha villa was this morning jailed for a year.

Jason Scerri 40 Balzan admitted to stealing around €2,060 in cash and jewellery from the house in Santa Marija Estate in August. His actions were caught on high-definition CCTV equipment and the man, who sports a particular tattoo on his right arm, was immediately recognised by investigators. Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed him for twelve months.

When asked by the magistrate if he has a drug problem the accused said he is currently on methadone. Mr Scerri is well known to the police and was involved in several thefts in the past.

Inspectors Saviour Baldacchino and Maurice Curmi prosecuted. Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace appeared as legal aid.
