Maltese employees of Leisure Clothing tell GWU they never saw Asian co-workers being abused

Friday, 31 October 2014, 11:41 Last update: about 10 years ago

The General Workers Union said today all Maltese employees of Leisure Clothing company told one of its officials yesterday that they had never seen their Asian co-workers being treated badly or in in a way which can be considered inhuman or slavery. The same thing was said by representatives of the company in a meeting with the GWU's central administration this morning.

Despite this fact, the union is still urging the police to continue with their investigations. It said that, if the allegations against the company are found to be true, those responsible should pay for their actions. The union said it will keep following the case closely to ensure that the rights of workers are protected.

In a statement issued this morning, the GWU also urged the company's management not to remain silent before these allegations.

The union said it condemns any form of worker exploitation. It said it does not distinguish between Maltese and foreign workers. The union noted that it had defended the rights of Pakistani and Filipino workers who were being exploited in the past.
