PL accuses Simon Busuttil of trying to solve PN’s financial problems through taxpayer money

The PL today accused the Nationalist Party of trying to solve its financial problems through taxpayer money.

It was reacting to calls by PN Secretary General Chris Said, who said this week that the Opposition will move an amendment to the Party Funding Bill for financial compensation to political parties which benefit less from the state than others.

"Simon Busuttil is in a very tight spot because of the party's financial problems and he wants the Maltese taxpayer to pay off the debts the PN has accumulated. The PN Leader is not credible. He is trying to portray himself as a competent person, but competent persons would not bankrupt their own party and then ask taxpayers to solve their financial problems."

The PL insisted that the Party Financing Bill was forgotten by consecutive PN administrations but the party now wants to use the law as a scapegoat.

"The only two ideas that came out of the PN's IdeaMalta convention last week were to increase social security contributions for employers and employees and the introduction of a tax that would serve to finance the party."

The PL said people are smart enough to realise which party is working hard in their interest and strengthening transparency.
