President launches appeal to Local Councils to raise more money for MCCF as funds will not be enough

Saturday, 1 November 2014, 12:01 Last update: about 10 years ago

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca has urged mayors and local councilors to give their utmost to support the Malta Community Chest Fund through the communities they represent. She warned that, unless more money is raised, the national solidarity fund will not be able to cope with the hundreds of requests it will receive.

The President said she has faith that Maltese people from their respective localities, represented by their local councils, understand the realities of the Malta Community Chest Fund and the need to show solidarity with people in difficult moments such as illnesses. The MCCF is facing realities such as cancer, the treatment of which is very expensive, and it therefore needs more funds.

The President said she does not want to face situations where she would have to refuse a number of requests because of limited funds. She believes, however, that the fund can expand through the enthusiasm and solidarity of the Maltese.

Many of the mayors and councilors present responded positively to the President's appeal and announced a number of events they will be organising to support L-Istrina.

Parliamentary Secterary Stefan Buontempo and PN Whip David Agius also pledged their full support towards the MCCF. Dr Buontempo said we need to celebrate solidarity with the vulnerable and that communities feel great satisfaction when they unite for a common cause. Mr Agius said people suffering from illnesses such as cancer need all the moral and financial support they can get.

In the meantime, Burmarrad Commercials yesterday donated two vans, worth €30,000, which are specially modified to transport persons with disabilities. The donation was made on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the company. Mrs Coleiro Preca said the vehicles will strengthen the presidency’s work towards the Malta Community Chest Fund.
