Malta's ambassador to China Clifford Borg Marks and investment envoy Sai Mizzi enjoy the exact same contract terms, The Malta Independent has confirmed through a freedom of information request.

Both Mr Borg Marks and Ms Mizzi earn a basic salary of €33,853, coupled with an allowance of €42,133.95 respectively.

Controversy over Ms Mizzi's contract erupted last year when the PN claimed she was earning €13,000 per month. The speculation was further fed by the government's repeated refusal to publish her contract.

They both enjoy a settling-in allowance of €8,988, a one-off outfit allowance of €931.75, a child allowance of €1,454 per annum less allowances received under Malta's social legislation.

The list does not end there. They also get a 90 per cent of their children's education costs reimbursed capped at €19,577.11, as well having 90 per cent of their medical costs reimbursed. The same applies to dental treatment.

Fifty per cent of ophthalmic expenses are reimbursed, as well as generous fixed line and mobile allowances.

As far as travel allowances go, they are allowed a maximum of five business class passages to/from their country of posting for both themselves and their dependents.

Free passage is granted when they are entitled to home leave, though they have to tough it out in economy class.

They were given an allowance for one 20-foot container by sea freight or 500kg by airfreight, as well as up to 20kg excess luggage on taking up their posting as well as on return from their posting.

Mr Borg Marks was given free furnished accommodation, while Ms Mizzi enjoys a fully expensed residence, but is burdened with linen and pillow expenses.

Both of them get an official car plus a fuel allowance, and a hospitality allowance.
