Traffic problems persist: Lija works causing long delays as TVM tries to limit the damage

Tuesday, 11 November 2014, 08:24 Last update: about 11 years ago

The ongoing works close to the Lija cemetery is causing huge traffic jams especially at peak hours, with drivers reporting that there have been many occasions in which they simply switch off the car engine as they wait for the cars ahead of them to move.

Drivers have complained that traffic jams are starting as far back as the University roundabout on one side, near the Mosta church on the north side and down the Rabat Road from the west side.

They said that the traffic deviations as suggested by Transport Malta are not functioning well because traffic is clogging the side roads being used as drivers try to avoid the Lija cemetery area.

The light rain also does not help the situation.

But it is not only in Lija that traffic is jammed. Other areas notorious to slow traffic movement such as the Kappara roundabout, Marsa and Qormi are being a daily traffic nightmare.

Drivers have commented that it is strange that the government is trying to give the impression that traffic issues are just a perception. Even the fact that, on a daily basis, the breakfast show on TVM shows areas where there is no traffic is an insult to all those who have to endure a long time in heavy traffic.

Employers are also complaining that many of their employees who are usually punctual are arriving late at their place of work.
