A funny look back at Malta’s 2014

Sunday, 16 November 2014, 21:29 Last update: about 11 years ago

This Christmas, the Comedy Knights will be presenting 12 Months of Funny, a show that is made up entirely of locally-written, original sketches that poke good-natured fun at Malta's socio-political landscape.

After last year's hugely successful debut show, which was described by The Times as "more sophisticated than Bla Kondixin" and "a rollicking comedy bonanza", the Comedy Knights are looking back at the year since then, and have created a show that is guaranteed to give plenty of laughs at the expense of local personalities, politics and daily life.

The show is performed by six of Malta's most recognisable comedy performers and written by a stable of the island's funniest writers. The comedy pedigree involved in the show is hard to beat: three London-trained comedy performers, two of Malta's funniest women and Colin Fitz.

Last year saw various sketches throwing a funny spin on topical subjects that occupied the Maltese mind in 2013. These included the selling of passports, the shooting of a flamingo, the national elections and a lecture on the Maltese language. It also included several other sketches about Maltese culture in general, and a finale in which the comedy group performed The World's Shortest Panto - 18 seconds long, in case you were wondering.

2014 has been a year of even more ups and downs, scandals, sell-outs, fools, horses (or should that be zieme?), mud-slinging and more. According to the Comedy Knights, the material practically writes itself! In the words of one reviewer, "Brilliantly scripted and cast, the show hones in on all the happenings of the year from the second the curtain goes up".

Directed by Wesley Ellul, this year's show features the original cast of Chris Dingli, Jo Caruana, Pia Zammit, Marc Cabourdin and Colin Fitz, with the addition of Thomas Camilleri, last seen performing in Les Miserables and Legally Blonde in London's West End.

The Comedy Knights' 12 Months of Funny will be performed at the Salesians Theatre in Sliema from 26 to 30 December, with tickets starting at €10 including complimentary reserved parking.
