Thursday, 20 November 2014, 14:27 Last update: about 10 years ago

The British High Commissioner confirmed with The Malta Independent that a British national was arrested on 19 November.

A police officer detailed as a security officer with Minister Manuel Mallia fired shots at the car driven by Stephen Smith following a car accident in Gzira.

The police would not confirm whether Mr Smith is in police custody, citing a law with deprives police officers from divulging the names of people held in custody for questioning.

The British High Commission confirmed with The Malta Independent that a "British national" was arrested on 19 November in Malta. No name was given, but the commission was answering a question made by this portal on whether Mr Smith had been arrested. It is therefore understood that the commission was referring to Mr Smith.

The Commission said that consular assistance was offered to the British national.
