Police officer Paul Sheehan, in the news following last week's shooting at a car, was taken to hospital this afternoon after an incident at his mother's house in Gzira.

Police told The Malta Independent that an ambulance took Mr Sheehan to hospital but it is not clear what kind of medical condition he has. It is reported that he was suffering from chest pains.

A duty magistrate called on Mr Sheehan together with some policemen as part of the investigations into last week's incident.

Mr Sheehan's brother entered the house soon afterwards.

Items were heard being broken inside.

Mr Sheehan was suspended from his duties as a police officer on Thursday after on Wednesday, he chased and fired at a car which damaged a mirror of the ministerial car.

The Malta Independent earlier reported that Mr Sheehan was supposed to be arraigned today on charges related to the incident. This afternoon's incident and his being taken to hospital will most likely postpone the arraingment to another day.

Sheehan was suspended from the Police Force pending a magisterial inquiry following a shooting incident in Gzira last week.

On Wednesday night, Sheehan gave chase after the car being driven by Briton Steve Morrison Smith allegedly clipped the side mirror of the minister’s car parked in Gzira. It has been alleged that at that time the driver was visiting his mother. When Sheehan caught up with Smith’s vehicle, several shots were fired towards Smith’s car and three bullets hit the car.

Initially, the government told certain sections of the media that warning shots were fired in the air but it later transpired that the shots were in fact fired at the car. The Opposition hit out at the government, accusing it of a cover-up, after the Briton’s car was allegedly moved before the magistrate arrived on site. The Commissioner of Police Ray Zammit has denied that he gave the order for the vehicle to be moved.

The Opposition has been calling on the prime minister to remove Dr Mallia from the post of minister.

The Prime Minister is in the process of appointing an inquiry which is independent of the magisterial inquiry already under way.

As is normal in inquiries, a number of persons are thoroughly interviewed hoping that this can shed new light on certain aspects of a case.
