Secretary general Chris Said highlighted today that political responsibility cannot be shouldered by a member of staff of a minister but by the minister himself, referring to Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, who is under severe pressure by the Opposition to resign.

The Opposition has called on the Prime Minister to remove Dr Mallia from his post as police minister following the incident involving his armed driver where several shots were fired towards a car last Wednesday.

He said that after one whole week we have heard that the driver would finally be arraigned some time today. But this in itself is a real scandal and enough reason for Dr Mallia to resign, he added.

"It is not as if Dr mallia can say he did not know his driver was involved in such an incident since it has been a week since the incident happened and the minister having known about it,"Dr Said pointed out.

Dr Said was speaking during a news conference held at the PN headquarters today along PN MP Paul Mifsud Bonnici highlighting that a general conference themed 'Political Honesty' would be held between this Friday and Sunday.

He said that the conference aims to look at ways how our country's institutions should remain left to work independently without any political interference whatsoever, referring to the Ombudsman, the Police Corp and the Administration of Justice mainly, in the light of allegations that such institutions have witnessed interference from politicians.

Dr Said pointed out that a PN government, if elected, would ensure that it would operate in an honest and transparent manner and this conference will delve with this issue. The conference aims to look at the basic principles of political honesty.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici said that it is evident, from the budget speech, that this government is an expert at lying while the PN is seeking the truth and building its politics on honesty.

She said that the budget showed that the government has no economic road map and no incentives were thought of to seek new avenues to enhance the economy.

She said that students were only given a two euro cent daily increase in stipends but on the other hand, the government did not say what indirect taxation youths will have to incur.
