A reformed drug addict was given a six month jail sentence after being found guilty of trafficking heroin around 14 years ago.

37 year-old Sandro Spiteri from Zejtun, the accused, was also fined €650 and was convicted of possession and breaching bail conditions from 1999.

The accused was arrested, after the police received a tip that he had stolen stereo and trafficked the drug. The accused admitted to selling drugs in order to pay for is drug abuse habit.

The Defence had argued that Mr Spiteri had already served time for Ttrafficking after being found guilty of the same charges in 2009, however the prosecution challenged this, saying that those charges related to trafficking drugs in 2001 and these proceedings regard trafficking heroin in 2000.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras upheld the prosecutions argument as the accused had claimed he had only sold drugs for two months, and that the charges were distinct from each other. The court noted that the accused currently has a job and no longer uses drugs, however still sentenced the man.

Superintendent Carmelo Bartolo prosecuted.
