The new Parliament building is a “monument of the previous government’s incompetence,” Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said in Parliament today.

The highest institution in the country has been “rubbished,” and is way too small for its purpose. He said construction delays were inherited from the previous government.

On the traffic problem, Transport Malta will be investing in an intelligent traffic management system, allowing for real-time traffic management. This will be done through electronic signs warning of traffic ahead and advising on alternative routes.

He called the increased subsidy for the new transport provider an “investment” which will ensure a high-level service is provided. The aim is to make using public transport a “natural choice.”

New buses and drivers will be needed.

The Opposition leader is not even here, that shows how interested he is on the transport problem, he said.

The government is going to continue to monitor the Controlled Vehicular Access system in Malta. Free access after 2pm and on Saturday’s is already attracting more people to Valletta, he said.

A myriad of works like the Coast Road, December 13 in Marsa and the Cirkewwa terminal were postponed under the previous administration. The present government has worked around the clock in all weather in order to complete all these projects.

He said works on the Kappara junction will not begin until works on the Coast Road have been completed in order not to compound the traffic problem.

Restoration works on the Triton fountain in Floriana are expected to last two years, he said.

The budget for cleaning works has increased by one-and-a-half million, and results are already being reaped in tourism zones, he said.

Oil drilling efforts are well under way, and although no oil has been found yet, the government is not going to give up.
