Monday, 1 December 2014, 20:36 Last update: about 10 years ago

Making a slight reference to the shooting incident involving the former driver of Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, Labour MP Deborah Schembri noted that during previous administration there has been cases of police officers who shot warning shots, however, at the time, no calls for resignation had been made.

Members of the Opposition, she said whhen speaking in Parliament, are expecting standards that they did not follow themselves when they were in government.  She noted that whether a police officer carries a weapon or not is the decision of the police commissioner, and not the minister.

The Labour MP was addressing tonight’s parliamentary session, which is dedicated to discussing budget’s measures falling in the remits of the ministry of home affairs.

Earlier on, Labour MP Deborah Schembri, while lauding those who work within detention centres, said that this ‘makeshift’ buildings were never transformed. “There is the need to respect these people’s basic human rights. Often at times, we look at irregular immigrants from a lens of someone who is living comfortable in a country respecting our fundamental rights.”  Mrs Schembri said that the public needs to acknowledge the fact that such individuals sometimes have no option but to leave their country.
