On Saturday 22 November 2014, APS Bank held the premier concert of two prize winning entries in its' 2012 National Music Competition.  The concert, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre was a success on all fronts.

Two Maltese composers, Steven-Joseph Psaila andPaul Portelli had the opportunity to have their works interpreted by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the distinguished patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Mgr Paul Cremona OP.

The concert, the fourteenth in series, was part of the final prize awarded to the composers following the APS Bank 2012 National Music Competition, which also included the professional recording of the musical works.  The recordings, which were held at Studio 7 under the direction of record label Gega New, were also interpreted by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Christopher Muscat.

"APS Bank has been striving to expand the range of possibilities by focusing on selected categories of music compositions. In its annual concerts it emphasised past compositions of sacred music; in its two competitions it encouraged both compositions with texts based on religious themes and others that derive their inspiration from the works of Maltese poets. The latter observe life, reflect on it, and draw their conclusions. In doing so they portray their inner self to all those who listen to their works, in the process encouraging them in subtle ways to undertake this process of reflection and possible action themselves," stated APS Bank Chairman E.P. Delia.

Composers Paul Portelli and Steven-Joseph Psaila thanked APS Bank for this incredible opportunity.

"I cannot thank APS Bank enough for their strong contribution not only from a composers point of view but mostly from a cultural view. This support is one which is truly needed and, most of all, one which will remain valid  and alive for years to come" stated Steven-Joseph Psaila.

Paul Portelli shared the same thoughts.  "Having my work interpreted by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and more over recorded professionally, published through a proper Record Label is a reality so incredible that sometimes I myself find it hard to believe."

The audience present at the premiere night were treated to Five Dun Karm Psaila Poems, a suite for chamber orchestra composed by Paul Portelli, who was awarded the special jury prize, and Katrin tal-Imdina, also a suite for chamber orchestra composed by Steven-Joseph Psaila, winner or the 'Suites' category.
