Lions Club Sliema helps poorest nation in the world

Wednesday, 14 January 2015, 19:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

Express Trailers is once again supporting the Lions Club Sliema in its latest initiative - the dispatch of school furniture and stationery to the poorest nation in the world, Burkina Faso.

Express Trailers will be transporting six pallets of school furniture and stationery items to Mantova Italy which will then be redirected directly to Burkina Faso.

Located in West Africa, Burkina Faso is also ranked by the UN Development Program Report as the country with the lowest level of literacy in the world despite its efforts to improve its literacy rate. High school costs approximately CFA 25,000 ($50 USD) per year, which is far above the means of most Burkinabè families. Boys receive preference in schooling; as such, girls' education and literacy rates are far lower than their male counterparts despite policies of making school cheaper for girls and granting them more scholarships.

"This situation is practically unfathomable in a country like ours where education has always been high on the agenda. This is why through this initiative we hope to raise more awareness about this country and its needs especially where its children are concerned," explained Victor Borg Barthet, President of Lions Club Sliema during a courtesy visit to Franco Azzopardi, Chairman & CEO of Express Trailers and David Fleri Soler, Head of Sales & Business Development.

"We are happy to be in a position to renew our support to Lions Club Sliema in this commendable initiative. Our job on the roads goes beyond transporting goods. We seek to operate our logistics in a sensible and responsible manner and being sensible and responsible means lending support when most needed," said Franco Azzopardi.

During the visit, Victor Borg Barthet, accompanied by other committee members from Lions Club Sliema, presented a commemorative plaque to Express Trailers as an appreciation for the company's ongoing support to Lions Club.

"In fact this was not the first time that Express has helped the Lions Club. In 2011, your company helped us transport used spectacles, uncut lenses and 450 unused frames to Medico Lions Club of France which is a Lions collection centre who then resent mounted glasses to a number of countries in Africa," added Victor Borg Barthet.
