€500,000 from European Regional Fund for Senglea bastion restoration project

Saturday, 17 January 2015, 12:54 Last update: about 10 years ago

Parliamentary Secretary for EU Presidency 2017 and EU funds Ian Borg this morning announced new restoration works on the Senglea Bastions.  These works will be made possible thanks to an allocation of around €500,000 from the European Regional Development Fund and will be aiming to restore pride to this historical landmark. These works will be also complimenting similar works on other fortifications in Valletta and in Vittoriosa.

Dr. Borg explained that these works will be consolidating those parts of the bastions that had been left to deteriorate.  Apart from restoration works on the bastion walls, there will be other interventions on the Gardjola (sentry post) - a place that in itself is already a huge tourist attraction.  Dr Borg explained that the need to carry out restoration works on these walls had been long felt especially now that efforts to create regeneration around the Harbour Area were being given a huge boost.

Dr Borg said that such investments showed the Government's commitment to continue to invest in the Cottonera area.  An area that had long been neglected has now seen the completion of the Dock 1 rehabilitation project in Cospicua and would soon be also benefiting from a further €12 million for the National Interactive Science Centre project which is set to give new life to Villa Bighi in Kalkara.

Senglea Mayor Justin John Camilleri also praised these works and said that such an investment was a response to the pleas of the citizens in the area. It should also further stimulate the economy in nearby parts and help the whole tourism sector which is so popular in this area.
